Talking to Your Parents about Estate and Incapacity Planning

Many of the people I talk to know that they need to discuss elder issues with their parents, but aren't sure how they can bring it up without causing offense. Here's a great article from Real Simple to help frame conversations with your parents about Estate Planning and Aging issues. I also encourage younger clients to use their own estate planning process as a way to ask about their parents' wishes. There is no substitute for a frank discussion about a person's feelings and beliefs to guide a potential attorney-in-fact or healthcare decision maker. My clients, and certainly myself, have found the discussion can even be a way to know and care for a partner or parent more deeply. We are here for each other!
